Slip knot and chain stitch
Most crochet projects start with a series of chain called a foundation or beginning chain. To get this chain started, you will need to make a slip knot.
The abreviation used for chains is ch.
-
Step 1
Leaving about 6 inches of free yarn, loop the yarn over the tail as shown in the picture.
-
Step 2
Insert the hook through the loop and grab the working end.
-
Step 3
Pull yarn through the loop.
-
Step 4
Holding both the free end and the ball end of the yarn, gently pull your hook up.
-
Step 5
Pull until the circle closes and forms a knot.
-
Step 6
Let go of the free end and keep pulling on the hook until the knot slips all the way to the hook. You are now ready to start your chain.
-
Step 7
Hold the base of the slip knot with your left thumb and index finger and yarn over as shown in the picture (from back to front).
-
Step 8
Pull the yarn through the loop on your hook. This will create your first chain.
-
Step 9
Moving your thumb and index finger up the chain as you go, repeat the process of yarning over and pulling the yarn through as many times as you need to create the the number of chains the pattern calls for. Do not count the slip knot or the loop on the hook as a chain.
